Free File Hosting-copylog

copylog has a great post called A Big Collection of Free File Hosting

Its a collection of 50 free file hosting from 10MB to 2GB that do not require registration, with detailed of file size limit, download limit and file life. Keep it for future reference.

“So what ?” comes a cry from the crowd.

Well, you know how every so often you want to send a really really really big file by email (the video of Happy Families around the Christmas Tree?) and … well you cant. Bigpond I think is capped at around 2M and 5M I think is the largest that most of the other big ISP’s will alllow. This is a way you can get around the annoying restriction. (As a sidenote. This is one of the top five questions I get asked doing tech support).

I knew that there were a lot of free file hosting services , but bloody hell? I didn’t realize there were that many of them. Copy-log has one big round-up of 50 free file hosting services that don’t require registration and stats are provided for maximum upload size, download limits, and file lifetime, but no value judgements. So “Caveat Emptor *” and pick one… if it doesnt work. Try another.

So here’s how to do it:

  • Create an account at one of the hosts.
  • Upload the file to the account
  • Send an email to the person you want to send the file to telling them the URL (address ) of the host, the user name and the password.
  • Tell them to email you and confirm that they have recieved the file
  • Log in delete the file

If you have qualms about them peeking and getting access to something they shouldn’t. Simply dont use that account again, create a new account the next time you have to send something large.

Thanks goto copylog for the list.

Now while we are discussing remote storage, you might want to have a go at a more bleeding edge solution,
viksoe.dk – GMail Drive shell extension.

GMail Drive is a Shell Namespace Extension that creates a virtual filesystem around your Google Gmail account, allowing you to use Gmail as a storage medium.

GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google Gmail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your Gmail account directly from inside Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag’n’drop files to. I tried it, it worked. I deleted it. Way to weird (yes folks there are even limits to my madness).

Update: ( And I hadn’t even posted this yet). Jools also found another list at http://www.lights.com/pickalink/freestorage/
there are some duplicates but there are a few new ones as well.

* Caveat Emptor is Latin for “Your Milage May Vary. It’s not my fault. Tell someone who cares.” .
