Gmail Bits

Just in time for Christmas, Gmail has added a few new bits.

First: You can now create an address list. They call them Groups.

To set up a contact group:

1. Log in to your Gmail account.
2. Click Contacts along the left side of any Gmail page.
3. Open the Groups tab, and click Create Group.
4. Enter your contact group’s name in the Group name: field.
5. Type the contacts you’d like to include in the Group in the Add contacts: field. (Gmail’s auto-complete feature will suggest addresses from your Contacts list as you type.)
6. Click Create Group.

But that’s not all – Gmail has also added an option for setting up an automatic holiday responses.

You can set up a vacation response in your Gmail account that will automatically reply to anyone who emails you. While the vacation responder is enabled, Gmail will send a response to anyone who contacts you.* If that person contacts you again after four days and your vacation responder is still enabled, Gmail will send another vacation response to remind the person that you’re away from your email.

Here’s how to let people know you can’t respond right away:

1. Log in to your Gmail account.
2. Click ‘Settings’ along the top of any Gmail page.
3. From the ‘General’ tab, select ‘Vacation responder on’ in the ‘Vacation responder:’ section.
4. Enter the subject and body of your message in the ‘Subject:’ and ‘Message:’ fields (you can also use the default message). * If you’ve enabled a personalized signature in your account, Gmail will automatically append it to the bottom of your vacation response.
5. Check the box next to ‘Only send a response to people in my Contacts’ if you don’t want everyone who emails you to know that you’re away from your mail.
6. Click ‘Save Changes.’

While the vacation responder is enabled, you’ll see a banner across the top of your Gmail account, displaying the subject of your vacation response. To stop Gmail from automatically sending the response, click ‘end now’ within the banner. Or, if you’d like to edit the response, click ‘vacation settings.’

and last but not least this is for Firefox and Gmail users.

One of the biggest hassles in Gmail’s user interface is having to use the dropdown menu item to delete messages. I don’t know about you, but I delete a lot of the messages in Gmail and I want a way more convenient way to need a convenient button to do so.

Enter Anthony Lieuallen, who provides a choice of Firefox extension OR Greasemonkey user script which adds a delete button to your Gmail.

You will need to read ANthony’s page carefully but it worked for me. ( I went with the Full Extension)
