Monday Morning “Impediment to Productivity” – 20060320

Hi,

Lets start this week with an oops. The dude I was listening to last week was Jeff Austin Black NOT James Austin Black (at least with a CD cover you get the guy’s name). A couple of weeks ago at the end of CSI MIAMI there was this killer (uncredited) song. A quick whiz around the internet and I turned up a couple of interesting facts.
One: Jools and I weren’t the only ones who were impressed by the song and
Two: The internet is a wonderful place to find music.

Stroll over to

or

or

and play Save Us All (awesome huh?)., then play Criminal and then play the rest of the tracks (over and over). Just wonderful.

Now onto the regular business.

I think you’ll like this one, as will the Monday Morning Productivity Impediment Players.

(I have no idea where Jools found this… take it up with her)

I’ve been looking and listening to audio mashups and video mashups for a while now but a video game mashup??? sort makes as much sense as anything else I suppose. “Mega Man vs. Ghosts ‘n Goblins”, is very cool. It’s a Flash game that seamlessly blends the original Mega Man and Ghosts ‘n Goblins (old Nintendo games), into something that looks like it never left the late 80’s. Only a a few levels, but extremely silly.

Onto the ” I don’t care about global warming … I want it dept”
A couple of weeks bask we pointed you over to the StarTrek themed home theatre. Very obsessive and impressive. This week we are seriously upping the ante. To quote…:
“It’s amazing how much more fun games are when you can play them on really large, high-resolution screens. Our lab also has a 24 monitor display wall, and as you can see from the pictures below, I got Quake 3 running on it. The system is driven by 12 linux servers (2 monitors per server) using Distributed Multihead X (DMX) and Chromium. Chromium distributes the OpenGL rendering from the head node to all of the servers. The game runs fairly fast, though some lighting effects had to be turned off and Chromium is having some trouble with the mouse. Even so, playing the game is an awesome experience”
Click on the link and check your wallet. ( I don’t want it for the games… I want it for editing music. That’s my story and I am sticking to it)

Flow is a an amazing Flash game and there’s no real plot to speak of, but you begin the game as a sort of small luminescent organism and you must eat other organisms to grow. You can go forward or back among the levels at will, but while the first levels are populated only by benign, easily-digestible prey, the later levels are filled with more dangerous adversaries that you’ll only be able to defeat if you’ve out-evolved them (sound like the music industry doesn’t it?). The game is unique in that there’s no timer and no score display (your health is represented visually in the composition of your organism) Its simple premise and simple controls, Flow is a game that’s immensely satisfying to play and difficult to stop playing. Oh, and did I mention the graphics are gorgeous?
