Passwords, Bloody Passwords

How many passwords do you have? Lots and I’ll bet it’s getting worse. Every e-commerce and community sites that want us to create accounts? (Yep even here if you want to leave a comment… another password). Do you end up using the same password at all of them and then feel stupid knowing that one oops and all your accounts are 0wn3d?

Well here is a cute (and I mean really cute ) solution. The Password generator by Nic Wolff, a Perl coder from New York City. So, how does it work?

Well you type in your LONG (more than 8 characters) master password into the the Master Password Field, next paste the URL or the site name into the sitename and press generate. Bingo you have an encrypted password that is different for ever site and you only have to remember one password. Cool huh.

Now are you a bit paranoid about having a website know your password ( better late than never ). Saver this page to your desktop or better yet your USB memory thingy (that’s a technical term) and use it from there.

Seriously if you are consistent with the site name convention, always use the URL for the login screen. This will work a treat.

UPDATE: If all the above seems a bit tricky (it’s not… really) have a look at Security Guide for Windows – Random Password Generator from WinGuides.com.
The WinGuides.com Password Generator allows you to create random passwords that are highly secure and extremely difficult to crack or guess due to an optional combination of lower and upper case letters, numbers and punctuation symbols.

Just remember to write them all down in a safe place. And here is a safe place. Password Safe byBruce Schneier and to quote

“With Password Safe, a free Windows utility designed by Bruce Schneier, users can keep their passwords securely encrypted on their computers. A single Safe Combination–just one thing to remember–unlocks them all.

Password Safe protects passwords with the Blowfish encryption algorithm, a fast, free alternative to DES. The program’s security has been thoroughly verified by Counterpane Labs under the supervision of Bruce Schneier, author of Applied Cryptography and creator of the Blowfish algorithm. ”

Once again you only have to remember ONE password and even I can do that.
