Sysinternals Freeware

SysInternals Freeware – Mark Russinovich & Bryce Cogswell is one of those sites that I think everyone knows about because I use some of their stuff every second day. I realised that this was very very wrong assumption, the other day when I told a friend to use psshutdown to fix a problem she was having with a batch file (it need to finish a job and then reboot the server at 1:00 am in the morning) and she said “Huh? I dont have that here”. One of those “you must be kidding me” moments ensued and I sent her off to Sysinternals.

Do you actually need this stuff? Well do words like…

  • Command Line
  • Advanced Utilities
  • Technical Information
  • Source Code

worry you? If they do it’s probably time to move along. If they dont click on the link above.

These guys write some great code. Some of my favourites that I use regularly…

  • Autorun shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them.
  • TcpView is a Windows program that will show you detailed listings of all TCP and UDP endpoints on your system, including the local and remote addresses and state of TCP connections.
  • BGInfo automatically displays relevant information about a Windows computer on the desktop’s background, such as the computer name, IP address, service pack version, and more
