Monday Morning “Impediment to Productivity” – 20060410

Hi, Back in September last year I did a Music and Audio special https://thatchspace.com/wordpress/2005/09/12/monday-morning-impediment-to-productivity-20050912/ and promised I would never do anything so self indulgent again (until next time )…its next time. Seeing as how CC365 had a “crunchy guitar week” and I am still on a buzz from the concert last week I thought this would be a good week to do it.

So let’s get it off to good start “Blame”

This week we have an entry from Jools T. and I quote

“i think this bloke is schizoid but hey, hey he’s worth a listen

and Jools is right he is. I believe he (they?) might be touring. Had a lot of fun listening to all this.

Over at O’Reilly Digital Media there is an article about the astonishing new DVD from Animusic,

“Hit “Play” and a bass guitar shaped like a pogo stick plucks itself with robotic arms, then gallops down a 3D path alongside fellow computer-generated bandmates. Skip ahead and streams of shiny balls bounce in perfect tempo across a room of spinning drum heads, chimes, and plumbing as 5.1-channel surround sound wraps around your head. Click again and you’re breathlessly floating above dozens of crisscrossing strings on an impossibly multi-necked “acoustic” instrument. Strangely graceful robotic fingers pick and strum, producing the sounds you’d expect from an actual guitar, lute, cello, or harp. Click once more and you’re front and center at a majestic computerized pipe organ as it bellows a MIDI-powered, high-definition version of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.”

There are quicktime samples of all of this audio visual goodness at

Over at Synthmania is a great item called “Famous sounds”, this is all about sounds that have been created or used by somebody, copied by everyone else become a classic and then programmed into little boxes so that everyone can be creative sounding just the same. Oh I have used and abused a bunch of these myself in the past and probably will again in some far distant future. (I love gated drums)

wikiRecording is a free guide to audio recording. There are some interesting articles and people sharing their knowledge and experiences. It is only a recent starter but it covers from micing instruments to house concerts. I would bookmark this one and pop back regularly.

So where did all this music stuff come from? Well Sharon Begley over at “The Wall Street Journal” (a noted music journal?) Has an article entitled

“Caveman crooners may have aided early human life”

The deal goes like
50,000 years ago around the caves of Le Moustier, in what is now the Dordogne region of France, a small band of Neanderthals were butchering carcasses, scraping skins, shaping ax heads — and singing. Some dude started a rhythmic sound with rising and falling pitch, and others picked it up, indicating their willingness to cooperate both in the moment and in the future, when the group would have to hunt or fend off predators. (I am leaving alone the metaphor of the music business today)

The music promoted “a sense of we-ness, of being together in the same situation facing the same problems,” suggests Prof. Mithen, an archaeologist at England’s Reading University. Music, he says, creates “a social rather than a merely individual identity.” And that may solve a long-standing mystery
Which mystery? Read the article.

Music is Dangerous. By now a lot of you will have heard about this one. It comes from Reuters.co.uk

Anti-terrorism detectives escorted a man from a plane after a taxi driver had earlier become suspicious when he started singing along to a London’s Burning by punk band The Clash, police said on Wednesday. God everyone’s a critic.

Linuxaudio.org has released its first compilation CD of music by artists using libre software – Tux Power! Every single part of the CD was made on Linux, including all the music, the mastering (with Jamin) and the artwork (with Scribus).

Full preview versions of the tracks in Ogg Vorbis format are available to download from:
http://linuxaudio.org/en/music/

If you have trouble playing some of the tracks in the previous item Freeware program foobar2000 is a lightweight, minimalist audio player. with native support for several popular audio formats. Despite the fact that foobar2000 can run on hardware that other players (like iTunes) would instantly kill, it’s no less a great audio player for even the most powerful computer. Foobar2000 is fully configurable as well as wonderfully compact and efficient. For example, I’m a big fan of keyboard shortcuts, and foobar2000 lets you easily set them up to do pretty much whatever you like. I am using it on the laptop instead of Winamp.

CC:365 bits of note from the last week: http://indieish.com/

(There’s a small glitch this week. I just got a note up from Grant, as I was writing this up saying that a tornado may have trashed his server and he wont know until Monday (his time) what the status will be. So if you get a 404 error try again later in the week.).

Day 94 : Both – I’m Leaving ( Crunchy guitars rule)

Day 96 : Foggy Bottom – Si tu Veux Bien (I like the vocals, good riff and of course added crunch)
